UNBELIEVABLY SIMPLE DISHES FROM NORTHERN THAILAND
From steamers to stir fries, Lanna cuisine is chock full of flavor as well as nutrition. If you’re ever in Northern Thailand and come across a Khantoke feast - DO.NOT.- I repeat - DO.NOT. PASS. IT. UP. It is one of the most common and delicious ways to explore this region of cuisine in a beautifully presented way.
One of the most common dishes would be Khao Soi Curry. One taste is all it takes for a cult-like following. It is a spicy coconut milk broth made with a beautiful blend of red and yellow curry spices, chicken broth, soy sauce, and most importantly sugar, to tie it all together. In order to truly enjoy the tastes of this dish you have to let these ingredients “marry” and just simmer for what seems like forever but in the end it is so worth it.
Speaking of letting foods “marry”, no trip to Northern Thailand is complete without tasting Nam Prik Ong (Chili Sauce) paired with Kap Moo (Perfectly fried pork skins). The deep red flavorful chili, pork, and tomato based dip looks almost like a spaghetti meat sauce but tastes nothing like it. The crispy pork skins make the perfect dipping mate for this spicy sauce and before you know it, your bowl will be empty after dipping to your hearts content.
If you’re looking for something on the lighter side but full of flavor, don’t fret, just try Miang Kham (Leaf wrapped Bites). This appetizer definitely embodies the flavor and freshness with ingredients that vary: shallots, ginger, chilies, and peanuts (to name a few). To say this is a must-have wouldn’t be far from the truth.
Never be afraid of flavor, so go on! Try something new today!
